Baked With Purpose: Elegant Elephant Brings Gluten-Free to Eugene
A celiac diagnosis and an empty stomach turned one Eugene baker's kitchen experiments into a full-service gluten-free bakery.
Born From a Real Need
Elegant Elephant Baking Company is a dedicated gluten-free bakery in Eugene, and its origin is personal. The owner has celiac disease, as does her father and her three children. When the business got started, gluten-free options were scarce, locally and nationally, and many people were still unfamiliar with what the term even meant.
A Menu Built Around Missing Something
The range at Elegant Elephant is wider than most people expect from a specialty bakery. Cream puffs, sourdough bread, birthday cakes and wedding cakes are all on offer, along with full catering services. Many of the recipes came directly from customers searching for something specific, a dish tied to a memory or a celebration they thought they could no longer have.
“We're in it for the long haul, so we're proud to be part of this community.”

What's Coming Next
Elegant Elephant is preparing to launch a home delivery service modeled on a gluten-free grocery store. The plan is to extend that service to territories around Oregon, with a rollout expected in the coming months. For customers outside easy driving distance of the bakery, it would be a meaningful expansion of what the business can offer.
A Community Worth Staying In
The owner is direct about why Eugene works for a business like hers. She describes the local community as tight-knit and relatively generous in its support of small businesses, and says that spirit of lifting up the whole community is something that matters to her personally.
